Gearing Up for the 2019 Oscars

If you are a movie junkie, or just love award shows and celebrities, make sure to tune in to the 91st Annual Academy Awards this Sunday, Feb. 24, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Fun/controversial fact: for the first time since 1989 (30 years, people), the Oscars 2019 ceremony will go without a host. This means that there will be no opening monologue, and probably not that many comedic episodes. Thus, the award show might lack some of the entertainment qualities that the majority of us are so used to. ABC Entertainment made the decision go “hostless” this year after Kevin Hart announced that he was stepping down as an appointed host over his homophobic tweets getting resurfaced.

But no need to worry! Many famous presenters — Chris Evans, Awkwafina, Pharrell Williams, and Jennifer Lopez, just to name a few — will still be there to keep your anticipation company. The remaining members of Queen - the subject of Best Picture nominee Bohemian Rhapsody - are also set to take the stage with Adam Lambert. Other performers include Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga with “Shallow,” Jennifer Hudson singing “I’ll Fight,” Gillian Welch and David Rawlings with “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” and Bette Midler with “The Place Where Lost Things Go”, all of which are nominated for the Best Original Song category!

It is notable to mention that both Roma, Alfonso Cuarón’s Netflix drama, and The Favourite, Yorgos Lanthimos’ historic drama, lead nominations for this year’s Oscars with ten awards each (including Best Picture). Lady Gaga is receiving her first acting nomination for “A Star Is Born,” and Black Panther has become the first superhero movie ever to be nominated for the Academy's Best Picture category.

So, whether you are actually interested in who will win the Oscars awards this year, or just want to chillax with some friends this Sunday evening in front of the TV, this prestigious ceremony is definitely worth watching.
